\u201cAnyone can end up here,\u201d my father says. He\u2019s filling out an endless stack of forms, and I have to stay quiet. It\u2019s been at least 110 hours. There\u2019s a high counter, with two blue latex hands behind it. They tell us what to do, but I don\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n

People come and go. A girl with an IV dances so lightly, I think she might fly. The boy who was just sitting next to me has no arms or legs, but he can do everything. There\u2019s a woman with such a heavy, oversized head that she almost tips over.<\/p>\n

You can get lost here too. An old man wanders through the hallway. You can laugh with him; he\u2019s forgotten he\u2019s been coming here for years. In his eyes, summer clouds drift.
\nAnd me, I\u2019m just different. \u201cThat\u2019s a good thing,\u201d my father says. \u201cThere\u2019s already so much that\u2019s the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musical performance If Things Turn Out Differently<\/em> is about a waiting room where no one wants to be. Where the walls shift, people stumble, and yet they remain strong.<\/p>\n
